When Is an Online Consultation Enough, and When Should You See a Doctor in Person?

Online consultations have changed how we access healthcare, but they are not a substitute for every visit. Knowing the difference helps you make the right decision at the right time.

Conditions suited to online care

  • Minor symptoms such as colds, sore throat, allergies and mild rashes.
  • Chronic-disease follow-up such as diabetes and hypertension, including dose adjustments.
  • Interpretation of lab results and imaging.
  • Renewal of ongoing prescriptions.
  • Mental-health consultations and support.
  • A second opinion before a treatment decision.

Conditions that need an urgent or emergency visit

  • Severe chest pain or sudden shortness of breath.
  • Bleeding that does not stop or a serious injury.
  • Loss of consciousness or sudden confusion in speech or movement.
  • High fever in an infant under three months.

In these cases call 997 or go to the nearest emergency department.

Getting the most out of your online consultation

Prepare a list of your symptoms and when they started, your current medications, and any previous reports or labs. Choose a quiet, well-lit place for a video consultation, and ask questions until you fully understand your treatment plan.
